Capacity Building Grant

The application window is now closed!
Stay tuned for the announcement of grantees in January 2023.

Are you a deaf-led organization that needs capacity building support?

The CSD Unites Community Foundation aims to strengthen organizations working with deaf communities by prioritizing funding for capacity building to bolster their organizational capabilities and long-term sustainability. According to the National Council of Nonprofits, capacity building invests in a nonprofit’s effectiveness and future sustainability. When an organization can operate, it can successfully fulfill its mission and positively impact the lives and communities they serve. Capacity building grants, therefore, focus not on a nonprofit’s outward-facing work but on the organization’s inner workings.

We invite you to submit proposals that will substantiate your organization’s operational, programmatic and financial efficiencies.

What types of organizations are eligible?

Any deaf-led organization serving deaf communities can apply as long as it is tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or has a fiscal sponsor that is tax-exempt under section 501(c)3 of the IRS. The Foundation defines deaf-led as at least 50% of the organization’s leadership are members of the deaf communities, including the executive director, management staff, advisory committees, or governing boards.

What do you not fund?

The Foundation will not fund individuals, sponsorship or capital projects (such as: construction, renovation or expansion).

Is there a maximum request for funding?

The maximum request for funding is $25,000.

Can an organization apply for multiple projects?
We encourage organizations to choose submit one application for their capacity building need.
Can I read the application questions before I begin applying?

Yes, yes you can! We have listed the questions on a document that you can download and review.

How can I invite other people to work on the grant application with me?

You can invite others to assist with your application by making them a “collaborator” via the Submittable application portal. At the top of your application portal, click on the “Invite Collaborator” link and send the link to the individuals you want to work with on the grant application. By collaborating with others, you can simultaneously work and review the application together, but you – the account holder- will submit the application when ready.

Is this recurring funding?

We understand that capacity building is a continuous process contingent upon available funding. Therefore, additional funding opportunities may be made available to you in the future, but at this time, this funding opportunity is for one year.

What are the anticipated reporting requirements?

The Foundation wishes to keep the reporting requirement simple. Therefore, grantees will submit a brief interim report halfway through their project and a brief final report at the completion of the project. The reports will be available in American Sign Language, English, and Spanish. In addition, the Foundation and grantee may participate in a mid-year check-in.

Lastly, organizations receiving funding will have to share a story of what they have accomplished and how the money has been spent.

Evaluation Criteria
  • Meets eligibility requirements
  • Sufficient information provided in application to make informed decision
  • Strength of proposal in addressing a capacity need that will either improve operational or long-term sustainability of the organization
  • The level of impact this funding will have on the organization and its ability to fulfill their mission
